As the world population grows, demand for healthcare practitioners grows as well. As a result, more doctors and nurses are required to attend to the individual need of patients. The result of the increased demand for nurses has caused nursing associations like the American Nursing Association to come up with standards that help promote the quality of services that are provided by the nursing practice. The standards are used as a general rule where all the nurses regardless of specialty and role, are expected to adhere to the regulations. The standards set the duties and which all the nurses are expected to perform and follow (Schober, Jane, and Carol 5).
ENTITIES
Apart from the Nursing Associations, other entities that might be involved in developing the standards include the States Boards of Nursing which develop standards aimed to provide better care at the state level, the department of health scope and the Nurse Credential and accredited center which sets the standards at the National level.
THE PROCESS
In the process of developing the nursing standards, the Nursing association involving the members of the nursing community in developing the standards that help solve any challenge in the profession. However, the process is not one that follows a linear process. As such, some activities move back and forth in the process (Schober, Jane, and Carol 5).
First, the entity developing the standards explores the nursing environment to identify any risk or exposure that might face the nursing practice now and in the future.

Secondly, a research is conducted to find out how the risks can be mitigated to reduce their effects (Schober, Jane, and Carol 5). Thirdly, based on the collected evidence, and with the support of all the stakeholders, the standards are developed regarding the issue at hand. The standards are forwarded to the relevant authority for approval. Fourthly, the set standards are published and shared among the relevant departments for action. Finally, the standards are monitored to ensure that they meet the set objectives. Further, they are reviewed periodically to ensure that they are up to date.
