SWOT Analysis
The University of Florida (UF) Health Shands Hospital is the official teaching hospital that serves the University of Florida and is based in Gainesville, Florida (Johnson, Julie et al. 723). Despite numerous strengths, the hospital also has various weaknesses that affect its operations. First, the hospital was assigned an “A3” score by the Moody’s Investors Service representing a downfall in its financial management. In essence, the healthcare facility moved from an “A2” ranking with $250 million to an “A3” with $381 million in its 2014 fixed rate bonds (Johnson, Julie et al. 723). Therefore, the rating downgrade represents Shands’ 60% increase in the unsettled debt.
Another weakness at Shands Hospital emanates from the 2016/2017 fiscal year’s capital that recorded a significant downturn. The facility’s cash flow margin fell from 10.9% at the end of 2016 to 8.3% the following year (Johnson, Julie et al. 724). Third, the Consumer Reports’ rankings demonstrated that the hospital has poor results for surgery patient under Medicare program. Although the management termed the report as inaccurate, reliable sources have supported the findings despite being among the best healthcare facilities in the U.S. Based on the length of stay, the patients who stayed longer were attributed to post-surgical complications. Besides, some patients complained of poor quality of care after the scheduled surgeries. As a result, the weakness has dilapidated the number of admissions received at the hospital per year.

Another weakness results from the Shands’ Hospital attempt to invest in people and empower the UF to assist the world (Johnson, Julie et al. 725). The facility is planning to thwart the challenge through uniting with the real strength of The Gator Nation. Although the Florida Legislature enacted the Bill in 2013, the UF preeminence remains a significant challenge. Nevertheless, overcoming the problem makes preeminence an opportunity to attain national and international goals by serving students and the world.
