A topic sentence is divided into three main components; the debatable topic, the persuasive opinion of the writer, and a pattern of organization (Oshima, Hogue, & Lê, 2006). Since persuasion is part of the purpose of sentence, the writer may choose any particular pattern of organization to support their claim. Additionally, the persuasive opinion of the writer is often indicated by the following forms of subjective phrases or words; must, must not, only, should, should not, all, always, or too. For instance, the following two topic sentences contain the three components of a sentence.
Topic Sentence I
Companies should provide free housing for employees due to various reasons.
In this sentence:
The word ‘companies’ is the debatable topic.
The phrase ‘should provide’ is the opinion of the writer.
The phrase ‘free housing for employees’ is also a debatable topic.
The phrase ‘due to various reasons’ is the pattern of organization.
Debatable topic: companies and free housing for employees
Opinion: should provide
The pattern of organization: due to various reasons
Topic sentence: Companies should provide free housing for employees due to various reasons.
As seen, the persuasive opinion of the writer in this sentence is indicated by the word ‘should’
Topic Sentence II
Alcohol and drug addiction are always the leading causes of college dropout in the United States.
Debatable Topic: alcohol and drug addiction, college dropout in the United States
Opinion: are always the leading
The pattern of organization: causes of
Topic sentence: Alcohol and drug addiction are always the leading causes of college dropout in the United States.
